Allan Spear Construction employs 100 to 300 employees depending on economic conditions. In 2010, a very difficult year for construction, we anticipate over 20 million in sales. "We strive to develop a core of competent foremen that we are real proud of," says Allan Spear III, President of Allan Spear Construction, "They've given us the ability to grow in size and complexity of jobs we undertake.
One of the company's most important initiatives is in the area of safety. We provide an OSHA 500 certified employee on every major project and all of our employees in the field are, at a minimum, OSHA 10 hour certified. "Safety is our number one priority," says Spear. "We want all of our foreman, forklift operators, and scaffold workers to be well trained on the latest industrial equipment, so they will know how to operate safely at all times," he says.
With headquarters located in Gainesville, the firm maintains construction offices on the site of projects that last a year or more.
Thomas Moss, Chief Estimator, is president of the local masonry association, and the firm is a member of the Gainesville Area Chamber, Tilt-up Association, the Safety Council, and the Gainesville Builders Association.
Allan Spear Construction began in 1955 as Doug Bishop Masonry. When Bishop decided to get out of the business, "my grandfather bought him out," says Spear. Since that time, Spear has expanded the business ten-fold. To maintain growth the company looks nationwide to bid selected projects, and to date has landed jobs from Puerto Rico to North Carolina, while still maintaining steady growth within a two-hour radius of Gainesville.
